Read Shop in Atlanta, GA
Cozy. Casual. Chic. Coffeeshop. I've been given all of these looks to create in my clients' homes. Sometimes at the same time. And when I'm tasked with creating a sophisticated environment that will inspire and nuzzle its inhabitants simultaneously, books are my first stop on the design express for several reasons.
1. BOOKS DEMAND ATTENTION

Books turn your room into an adventure as they naturally infuse interest and curiosity into a room. We love perusing book titles and flipping through the pages to discover what's inside. Be they floor-to-ceiling on a wall or giving a fireplace a new reason for existing, books demand attention. They can fill an otherwise empty room with color, scale, and culture, and they are great conversation starters! A curated book collection is one of the most accurate glimpses into its owner personality, passions, interests, and beliefs. And people, this is what your home should reflect. It should tell your story, and what better way to do that than with literal stories?
2. BOOKS CREATE COMFORT WHILE ADDING STYLE

First, most of us have been in a Barnes and Noble or at least a library, so we're used to being surrounded by books...and we tend to love it! Books are classic; they will never go out of style. They're nostalgic. They're an escape. They're cozy. We have cliche phrases like "curl up with a book" and "reading nook". These sayings imply warmth and security (dare I reference Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs), and at the end of the day, most people can happily live with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with books as opposed to, say, floor-to-ceiling leopard-print wallpaper.
3. BOOKS ARE THE PERFECT ACCESSORY
They are one of the most adaptable accessories on the market.

They're budget-friendly; it's called Amazon my dear. Or the Dollar Tree. And you can definitely get the look without curating a dream library because, yes, that takes time (but do it, do it, do it!). If you want a certain color in your room, books can be spray painted into color groups, or just color-coordinate the covers.

If you want a clean, crisp, minimal look with texture, turn the books around so that only their pages show (of course, this makes the books a wee bit harder to distinguish).

You can use them to elevate other accessories like small jewelry boxes. You can throw them anywhere. ANYWHERE. Empty space driving you crazy? Fill it with books. Pretend you've read them all. Even better, do read them all (put the phone DOWN0! Feeling smarter smartypants? Feeling sophisticated? Feeling like your house is hugging you? Great. Books = Can't Lose.
